BELO HORIZONTE

Belo Horizonte, BrasileBelo Horizonte, called Belô or Beagá, is located in south-eastern Brazil and has been the capital of the Minas Gerais state since 1897. The city has 2,412,937 inhabitants and extends over an area of  330.9 km², although the overall metropolitan area’s population is 5,357,942. Founded in 1895, Belo Horizonte replaced Ouro Prêto as state capital and quickly became an important commercial opening towards the regions of the country’s interior.

The city’s economy is based on commerce and services for around 80%, while industry accounts for the remaining 20%. Indeed, many Brazilian and multinational companies have chosen Belo Horizonte for their headquarters and there are even many Piedmontese companies (e.g. Fiat, Ferrero do Brasil, Comau do Brasil Ind., Lavazza) with headquarters in this area.

The city is a dynamic cultural centre hosting events that arouse a great deal of interest at national level, such as the Biennial International Theatre Festival “ Festival Internacional de Teatro Palco & Rua ” and the “FID Circolando BH”, a popular contemporary dance programme aiming to produce shows and other activities like workshops, seminars and video exhibitions in the most disadvantaged areas of the country.

REASONS FOR THE PARTNERSHIP

The choice to establish a partnership with the Prefeitura of Belo Horizonte made by Turin Municipality, formalized by the declaration of intents undersigned in 2006, stems from a number of reasons which can be summarized as follows:

  • Many Italians live in this area- approximately 1 million - many of Piedmontese origin, who arrived in the course of the migrations that occurred over the last centuries;
  • Reliable and longstanding industrial and business ties between the Turin system and the Belo Horizonte system: indeed the Antenna of the Piedmont Region - run in partnership with the chamber system - pursuing the goal of promoting business exchanges between the two regions, is extremely active in the area;
  • Traditional trade union solidarity joining the two cities;
  • The commitment to coordinate with decentralized regional cooperation policies (formalized by the Cooperation Protocol L.R 50/94 signed by the Piedmont Region and by the Mina Gerais State in September 2003).

Lastly, the Brazilian city is leader - on behalf of FNP – of the programme “100 cities for 100 projects for Brazil” which, launched on Turin City’s initiative (as ANCI leader) aims to promote administrative decentralisation and participatory democracy policies within Italian and Brazilian cities.
