The intercultural activities carried out by
Chef Kumalé and
The
Couscous Clan Cultural Association, particularly those linked
to the knowledge of different material cultures through the "door
of food", in addition to having aroused a constant and growing
interest on the part of the public and the media have clearly brought
to light the ambivalent relationship which our citizens experience when
faced with "other" cultures, especially in the Porta Palazzo
area. The increase in migratory flows towards our city and the concentration
of foreigners in the Porta Palazzo district, which has always been a
meeting place for the socialisation of "new Turinese", has
led to an increased demand for consumer products on the part of the
various communities present. Over the last five years this area of Turin
has seen a considerable increase in a series of economic activities
run by entrepreneurs of various nationalities (Arabs, Africans and Orientals),
many of which are linked to the food and catering sector. Occasional
problems, often intensified by the Media, focusing on undeniable difficulties
in civil co-existence, have increased the sense of insecurity and danger
among those who live or journey through the district and have projected
a distorted image of reality on to the entire area.
During the courses on cuisine and the material cultures of the world,
organised by Chef Kumalé, from 1995 to today, Porta Palazzo has
been an important reference point, and not just for finding "exotic"
products.
Tourists at home, was founded in the autumn of 1999 with the intention
of drawing our co-nationals closer to immigrant communities through
the organisation of itineraries and meetings with the world of multi-ethnic
aggregation and economy. More than 600 people have been able to get
to know the market area from this original point of view, strolling
among mosques, ethno shops and multi-ethnic bazaars, tasting products
and trying out the pleasure of getting to know some aspects of the communities
that surround us.
Thanks to collaboration with The Gate Project we are producing three
maps on the multi-ethnic components of the market:
100% ARABIAN, dedicated to the Islamic community,
TURIN-DAKAR
on West Africa,
OGNI BEN DI BUDDHA on the Asiatic world
and minority communities (East European)
The maps will make it possible for the public to construct their own
discovery route among the meeting and consumption places of immigrant
communities, and will be accompanied by an introductory guide (
PAPPAmondo)
to the innumerable alimentary products now available in the area.
