WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The action involved the restructuring of the
San Gioacchino Oratory, already a meeting place for
youths in the Porta Palazzo-Borgo Dora district, to create a centre
for learning and leisure time aimed at youths in the district so that
it could become a stable reference point for the youth community. The
Centre has used personnel composed of volunteers, conscientious objectors
doing their military service via community involvement and, at times,
teachers. The activity has been developed during the week in the afternoons
for all the children in the elementary, middle and upper classes, and
on Saturday mornings for just the elementary children.
Some 40 individuals are taking part, divided into 3 age bands and, for
each of them, a personalised didactic programme is agreed with the teachers
from the school to which they belong. Special importance is attached
to collaboration with the families which is earnestly sought after by
the operators in the Centro Ragazzi (Youth Centre).
The youths and children who come to the Centre do so either because
they have been selected to do so by their schools, families, classmates,
territorial education section, the area NPI, or of
their own free will.
During the summer period (1998) Summer Youths was organised; the activity
was held over 6 weeks (from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 to 17.00 in
June and July) and involved assistance, animation and canteen service
for the children in the elementary and middle classes. In October the
Centre for minors who risk low educational standards, involving some
50 boys and girls, was started up again for the same age bands. In addition
ludic, sports and animation activities were started up too. Some of
the rooms in the oratory have been appropriately modified: the Kids
Room for children under 6 where they can play tranquilly with their
mothers; the Billiards Room for adults; the Music Room and Animators
Room.
