Requalification
intervention of the Molassi ex-canal in Borgo Dora between via Andreis
and via Mameli which at one time constituted an energy resource for
Borgo Dora, the early industrial sector of the city. From its flowing
waters it was possible, in the past, to derive energy using the blades
of the mills and, subsequently, for the production of weapons and utensils
in the Arsenal and for factory activities.
The Canal was also used to irrigate kitchen gardens and to ensure urban
cleaning operations. The covering of the canal, and thus its dereliction,
dates back to the 1940s. Over the section in question there used to
be, until a year ago, roofing in appalling conditions. The project involves
new paving and with the next upgrade a complex of dehors, opening up
the back offices in the commercial premises along via Borgo Dora.
The main interventions which characterised the work included the demolition
of the dilapidated roofing; the creation of new paving with materials
which repropose the historical image of the location; and new public
lighting.
The road has been paved with cobbles and slabs of Lucerne Stone, similar
to the nearby via Borgo Dora. In the central part there is a sinusoidal
design in blue "Azul Macauba" marble, recalling the presence
of the water which used to flow in the canal.
The last part of the Canale Molassi, over via Andreis (finished at the
end of 2001) becomes the income of the Arsenal Complex, opening a new
road that flanks the Maglio Court until San Pietro in Vincoli.
The inauguration of the "new" road
occurred on 15 March 2001 in the presence of Mayor Castellani, the president
of Constituency zone 7, Luciano Barberis, and the traders and residents
of Borgo Dora.
The total investment for the works came to 1,500,000,000
