Spiace che i portoghesi, cui era destinato il monumento, non abbiano mai potuto vedere questa Minerva seria e sensuale insieme, modello di classicità ricreato da Vela con sensibilità naturalista. Gli attributi della tradizione ci sono tutti, elmo, peplo, lancia, libro e corone d’alloro, ma la dea muove un passo in avanti e l’ideale antico diventa d’incanto modello d’umana virtù.

It’s really a shame the Portuguese this monument was originally meant for have never been able to see this classical model of a serious and sensual Minerva that Vela recreated with a naturalist’s sensitivity. It features all the attributes of Tradition: headpiece, peplum, lance, book and crown of laurel, but the Goddess makes one step forward and the ancient ideal suddenly becomes a model of human virtue.
