Within a precious baroque scenery: egyptian deities, echoes of the Risorgimento, art and science collections, and a dip into the world of Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
A pedestrian route leads from Piazza Castello passing through via Accademia delle Scienze into Piazza Carignano, the triumph of subalpine baroque. Here we find some historical buildings looking onto the square, among which the Theatre, designed by Benedetto Alfieri and recently restored.
Palazzo Carignano, which gives its name to the square, was the residence of the Princes of Savoy –Carignano and saw the birth of Vittorio Emanuele II. Its first nucleus goes back to the second half of the seventeenth century: with its sinous terracotta facade and two bending stairways, it is considered as one of mathematician and architect Guarino Guarini’s best works.
You can admire the stairways which lead to the noble floor and then reach piazza Carlo Alberto through the courtyard. The Palace hosts the historical, artistic and etno anthropological Heritage Superintendence of Piedmont, the Deputazione subalpina di storia patria (Subalpine Institute of Historical Research) and the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento.
