Córdoba is located in central Argentina and was founded by Jeronimo Luis de Cabrera in 1573. With almost 1,300,000 inhabitants dislocated over an area of 562 km², it’s the second most populated city in Argentina. The official language is Castilian, but the original dialects of immigrants – the majority of which from Piedmont, Veneto and Sicily - are still spoken.
The city rises in the region of the Sierras (central hills), along the bank of the Rio Primero river. The climate is temperate and the healthy air is beneficial for those suffering from breathing problems. Indeed, its strategic location attracts many tourists who spend the summer along the streams while enjoying the fresh air of the hills.
Córdoba is an important industrial centre: the most important car manufacturers, including FIAT, have headquarters here. There are also aeronautic plants, and the high technology industry is present thanks to the Motorola group’s investments. Further, the city of Cordoba is one of the three major centres for machinery and clothes production.
The field of research and education is particularly strong and greatly valued. In fact, there are as many as 7 universities, the most prestigious of which is the Universidad Nacional, established in 1613 by Jesuits. The complex of buildings they constructed has been declared World Heritage by Unesco.

Turin and Cordoba have initialled a twinship agreement, approved by Turin’s City Council on May 20th 1986, undersigned on June 23rd 1986 in Turin and ratified in Cordoba on November 28th 1986. The purpose of the agreement is to establish a relation of reciprocal collaboration and friendship in various fields, among which culture, economics and technological development.
The reasons for the twinning can be summarised as follows:
Both history and memory are shared by the people of Cordoba and Turin in respect to commitment towards the struggle for rights and the defence of freedoms. These deep ties have led to symbolically represent the relations existing between the two cities by awarding in 2006 the Honorary Citizenship to Tati Almeida, one of the “plaza de Mayo mothers” belonging to the “linea fundadora” i.e. the group of women who, starting from a Thursday of May 1976, has constantly increased and continues to congregate in that square, facing the presidential palace, to ask for truth and justice on desaparecidos.
