September 2008 Mission to Jerusalem - Israel

The Mayor of the City of Torino, Sergio Chaimparino, was invited to the 26th edition of the "Conference of Mayors" that took place in Jerusalem September 14th-18th, 2008. The Mayor related Turin's experience in the fields of urban transformation, sustainable transport, and industrial innovation.

50 Mayors from all over the world were present at the conference affording great opportunities for exchanging experiences and good practices on the themes of sustainable development and environmental impact of infrastructures on local circumstances. 

The workshops began September 15th following the opening ceremony held the previous day.  The first session, after an introduction by Uro Lupolianski the Mayor of Jerusalem, was dedicated to innovations within the sphere of urban environmental quality.  Confronting this theme were experts from Jerusalem, the Mayor of Turin Sergio Chiamparino, and the Vice Mayor of London Sir Simon Milton. After the official lunch that afternoon, in the presence of the Minister of Welfare and Social Services, and the Minister of the Diaspora, Society, and the Fight against Anti-Semitism, Isaac Herzog, the workshops ensued with presentations on the themes of municipal services and standards of living in urban centres.

September 16th was devoted to visiting and studying the City of Jerusalem with thematic discussions concerning green spaces held by experts and Mayors František Knapìk of Kosiçe and Martin Chavez of Albuquerque.

The final day’s schedule included visits to the Holocaust Memorial, lunch at the Foreign Affairs Ministry and a closing ceremony.

During his stay in Jerusalem the Mayor also met the Consul General, Luciano Pezzotti, and the Italian Ambassador in Tel Aviv, Luigi Mattiolo.
