On 3 July 1958 a twinning agreement was signed in Liège by the Cities of Rotterdam, Lille, Esch-sur-Alzette, Liège, Cologne and Torino, representing the 6 founding countries of the European Economic Community (founded in Rome with the Treaty signed on 25 March 1957). This multiple twinning called “Ring of twinned cities” was based on the solidarity and sense of belonging to the European Community as well as on the similarities shared by the countries in the fields of economy, history and culture.
On 10 May 2018, for the twinning’s 50th anniversary, Rotterdam renewed its commitment to cooperate with the other cities of the “Ring” signing the Charter for Sustainability.
